Still alive?

Postby Kilagain » Fri Dec 18, 2009 5:33 am

Its great to see Hardwar is still alive, even after it was abandoned by its creators a few years after its released. I think its awesome that your recreating Hardwar with nice modern graphics 8-)
I've helped out a bit with the old community, going by the name of Blackace. Anyhow if there's anything thing you need art related I'd be happy to help :)

Yes, still alive

Interesting topic name (of course we're still alive :D ). Well we need a lot of art done, I put a few things up that need doing however it's not a comprehensive list.

What kind of artwork are you most interested in doing? Being good at it isn't a requirement, practice makes perfect. Try to pick something that will keep you motivated. The last thing I want happening is people getting bored and never coming back.

Feel free to just start working on something and keep everyone up to date by posting about it on the forum. I also update the blog weekly on what's happening so make sure to check that out too.

Well if you need some direction in what to do concept wise then here are my suggestions, however don't feel like you need to do them in particular.

  • You could always work on some vehicle designs. A couple ideas off the top of my head were some smaller and bigger vehicles that Hardwar classic didn't have. A smaller one seater fighting moth with no cargo pod ability and two laser cannons. A big cargo moth with no weapon ability.
  • Another suggestion is to help visualize what the airlocks should look like and move (from an outside perspective) and if we're making this massive cargo moth that I just suggested, how that would fit in the airlock.
  • I like the monorail tracks from the original Hardwar artwork (see attachment below). Maybe we could do something similar.

Well those are my suggestions. They're all to do with the outside environment because right now that's what I'm focusing on.

Nice, I've got a few things I'm doing right now, but I'll do some in my spare time :)

EDIT:

I've done a VERY quick piece in photoshop so I didn't add colors or details. Basically its a ground based scavenger (I always wanted to see something like that in the original :D ). I'll work on moths tomorrow.

Sorry for my unhealthy habit of saving it as a large image :P

Another EDIT:

To late, I couldn't help myself :)
No colors, I'm coloring skills just aren't happening today...

I like your moth design, quite modern looking. One thing I was discussing with someone else was how the pods should look like. If they should still be this long tube bolted onto the moth or a something stylized to the moth.. or perhaps something in between. I don't know what your take on it is but i'd be interested to know

I can picture the scavenger perhaps having a drone to pick up scrap or being used in mining. It'd be quite nice to have more stuff on the ground, because the original game was quite bare.

Another idea I had for moth vehicles...

  • An Emergency moths such as ambulance.
  • A 6 seater moth, maybe similar or exactly the same as the large cargo moth I mentioned previously. A 6 seater moth could have multiple uses, a bus type moth, a military vehicle, etc.

Andrew: your work? Reminds me of French sci-fi comics :)
Kilagain: It does indeed look very basic, but also promising. The second one looks a bit too round and too sporty for a cargo moth, but it would probably be a good look for a scout or fighter.
Large images are good! but you could crop the white a bit :p

I made those off the top of my head in literally 3 minutes. Very untidy, and I keep forgetting to resize the images :?
The problem with large moth's is getting them trough the airlocks, maybe you could design some sort of a large vehicle hangar. Or an airborne docking station, to make the gameplay feel less barren :D

And who said anything about a cargo moth, it could be the Lamborghini of Titan :D Perhaps a form sports could be added, but that would be drifting off from the original hardwar feel.

I've been thinking about the large moth problem which is why I think we need to design and model the largest moth we're going to have in the game first. This way we can design the airlocks to the right size. I'm not so sure about the big / small airlock idea because I think it makes the game unnecessarily complicated. I'd rather stick to the one size fits all idea.

My original idea however wasn't to make super massive moths, just something a little bit bigger then a moon moth that could:
  1. transport up to 6 people with no cargo pod or;
  2. transport up to 2 people with extra cargo space
My idea was that both would be derived from the same model and could be used for lots of different things such as emergency vehicles, military transport, cargo trading, passenger transport, etc. Just whip a different texture on it. :D

I'll get started on a 6 seater moth, I'll have to find a way around the size issue. The moon-moth had only two seats, but minimal free space in the airlocks... But its been ages
since I've played Hardwar, I just found my original disk so I'm going to reinstall it :D I fear I might be addicted to it again :P

EDIT:
I started on the six seater, but came up blank, instead I made a emergency service moth.

Image

Its a fairly basic ambulance, it looks like a cross between a police moth and a goa'uld death glider :P
